Winners Of The Woodie Awards Design Contest

November 12, 2009 — 1

The Woodie Awards (if you don't go gold, you don't go platinum, you go wood) -- the annual college and indie music moment of truth -- are next Wednesday at Roseland Ballroom in New York. They air Friday, December 4th on MTV, MTV2, mtvU and Palladia. The Woodies are kinda like the antidote to the typical award show, in that they're really all about the performances that night, the music, the artists put on stage each year by the college kids who demand them. We don't choose the nominees, we don't choose the winners, and we didn't even design the original Woodie award itself. College students do it all. What do we do? We get out of the way as they take over, more and more each year. Because it's not our show, it's theirs. And millions of college kids can't be wrong. This year, we teamed up with the legendary MTV on-air design group to give student artists and graphic designers a chance to take over yet another element of the show: The graphic opens for each award announcement. You know, the whole "And the nominees are..." thing? This time, college students did the art, and the MTV team is animating the winning submissions. Hundreds of students submittied, and here are the winning designs for each category, which we're building into the show as we speak... woodies_final_selects And the incredible college students who made them: "Woodie of The Year" by Janice Chae, MICA "Best Music On Campus" Liz Moser, Pratt "Good Woodie" by Michael Kennedy, Pratt "Radio Woodie" by Kyle Hebert, Massachusetts College of Art & Design "Performing Woodie" by Kathleen Madamba, Drexel "Left Field Woodie" by Julie Friedenberg, Pratt "Best Video Woodie" by Lisa Champ, Pratt "Breaking Woodie," by Tommaso Dell’Anna, Pratt Congratulations, guys, see you at the show on Wednesday. - Ross

Matt & Kim Performance Will Kick Ass Next Wednesday

November 11, 2009 — 2

When we saw Matt & Kim open for Friendly Fires, and then they came and shredded our office to bits, we just had to make sure we locked the Brooklyn duo to perform at the Woodies next Wednesday at Roseland Ballroom. If you've never seen these two play live, you gotta. We've been working with Matt and Kim for the last couple of weeks, and the more we do, the more psyched I get for them to take the stage. They've got great ideas, they never do the same thing twice, and they always go full force, huge energy. I also really appreciate Matt's cinema background, and how much they are collaborating with us on the creative look and feel. Matt & Kim's video has some tough competition for Best Video Woodie this year, up against two artists that are also performing for us next week, Death Cab For Cutie and The Dead Weather. I just voted. Did you? I'm looking at the voting numbers and they're too close to call in this category. One thing's for sure, they all want to take home the chunk of wood, but only one of these artists will... PS I heard that, yesterday, on a call with a reporter covering the Woodies, Chris Walla of Death Cab (who is a great guy) was asked to compare winning a Woodie to winning a Grammy. Guess which one weighs more?

Just Took A Picture Of My Woodie

November 10, 2009 — 0

Damn, I swore to never write a headline like that.  Shit. Anyway, the Woodie Awards are 8 days away (November 18th at Roseland Ballroom in NYC) and I can finally see the show in my head. We shoot it next Wednesday, then we edit to air on MTV, MTV2, mtvU and hi-def channel Palladia on December 4th. More than 6 million votes have been cast so far -- have you voted yet? Besides all the confirmed performers -- Death Cab For Cutie, The Dead Weather, Matt & Kim, and Passion Pit -- there are a few more performers we are about to announce this week, and also some surprise performances coming that night. Not to mention a ton of artists and celebrities set to present awards and hang out, which we'll announce soon, too. Normally what I do to get my head in the game is load my iPod up with all the songs that will be performed on the show, in order, and I run around Prospect Park every morning and listen to them over and over. But since I am enormously fat now, I can't run. And it's more fun to blast the songs at home and eat meatloaf. Ok, are you ready to see what the actual Woodie Award looks like? MyWoodie It is extremely heavy, like 25 lbs at least! And you see that hammer? It comes off. One year, MOdest Mouse took the hammer and pounded the metal spike into the wood. Those rebels.

Design The Graphics For This Year’s Woodie Awards On MTV, MTV2 & mtvU

October 6, 2009 — 0

The Woodie Awards are at Roseland Ballroom in NYC on November 18th. It's a show for college kids, by college kids. They pick the nominees, they pick the winners, and they put the artists they love most on stage that night to perform. It's a huge party and a huge moment for indie music, six years in a row and counting. beck at woodies This year, our on-air graphics team is collaborating with college students in a new and exciting way. You know those "and the nominees are..." graphics packages that MTV award shows are famous for? They're always unique, always graphically brilliant. This year, college student artists are doing the designs for those. Yet another way that students are literally taking the show into their own hands. If you are an artist (or know one) in college today, click here to find out how you can get your work featured on this year's show. An incredible opportunity for millions of people to see your work on MTV, MTV2 and mtvU. From my colleagues in our on-air design group... Woodies 2009: A Typographical Extravaganza The mtvU Woodie Awards is the annual college music awards show that highlights indie music and shouts out those artists making their mark in the field! Unlike other music awards shows, here, the student is the voice, and your vote determines which music is best. Each year, the MTV On-Air Design team is asked to create the live and on-air graphics packaging for the event. Throughout the show eight awards are presented, each category requiring a graphic introduction, and we’d like to give you the opportunity to get involved. For more information about the show, nominees and online voting, log on to Creative Brief This year we are proposing A Typographical Feast, wherein college art/design students in typography/illustration individually craft each category title. It’s the evening of the event…the house lights go down, and all eyes are focused on a giant HD screen that will display individual category titles… Imagine WOODIE OF THE YEAR spelled out in sprinkles… The possibilities are endless…

Past performers include Beck, TV On The Radio, Gym Class Heroes, Lykke Li, Santigold, Death Cab For Cutie, Imogen Heap, Matisyahu, Saul WIlliams, Q-Tip, The Academy Is, Asher Roth, Cool Kids, Rilo Kiley and more. The Best College Radio Station In America?

October 4, 2009 — 2

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="526" caption="(Paramore at last year's Woodie Awards)"]Paramore at last years Woodie Awards[/caption] My group just told me how many college kids have already voted for the best college radio station in America. It's in the millions! Not sure why I am surprised, when you think about how kickass these stations are, and how nonexistent most other stations on American radio have become. Yeah, suckas -- college kids fuckin keepin' radio alive. This category of the 2009 mtvU Woodie Awards is the only one currently votable. We opened it up for voting, unannounced, a couple weeks ago. Obviously people heard about it. Well, unless something delays it, we're going to announce the full list of 2009 mtvU Woodie Awards nominees on Monday -- THIS Monday -- as in about 24 hours from, like, now. It's a compelling list. Can't wait? Vote for a college radio station right now, show some love for kids who stay up all night and play music you'd never know about if they didn't.
