It’s Not What You Do, It’s Why You Do It

We all, at some point, struggle with natural questions about who we lead, who we follow, and why. Like all of us, I’ve followed (and still do) some inspiring leaders, and I’ve also followed some leaders that simply didn’t — or couldn’t — lead. Why did I even bother to follow them as long as I did!

As Simon Sinek’s TED talk, below, reminds us: “There are leaders and there are those who lead. Leaders hold a position of power or authority. But those who lead, inspire us. We follow those who lead not for them, but for ourselves.”

Seems kinda obvious, right? Well, how do you know if your leader is actually leading? And is worthy of leading you?

As Sinek says, “What you do serves as proof of what your believe.” We follow our greatest leaders not just for what they do but for the impression we have of why they do what they do, what is driving them.

If you haven’t seen this, it’s worth a few minutes.
