Asher Roth, Janelle Monae, Byron Ward, Tim Kash, John Loscalzo, Matt & Kim, Clipse, Tony DiSanto, Kim Stolz and More At The Woodies Afterparty

December 14, 2009 — 3

The Woodie Awards afterparty is always quite wonderful on many, many levels, most of which can't be discussed. In the heart of a recession, it's not like there's gonna be a holiday party, so this becomes a holiday party. It's a perfect combo of drunk artists, drunk celebs, drunk executives, drunk fans, drunk bartenders, drunk security, get the idea. This year I stayed sober and found myself in hilarious conversations, including one in which a colleague asked if I attended the show this year. Attended? Um, yeah, dickfor. Anyway, here's some of what I remember... - DiSanto and I had a drink and talked about I can't remember what and even if I did I couldn't write it down here. - Kim Stolz slipped me her badge because I'd given mine to someone else so they could get into the party. - I had a great talk with Nick from Seven2 about how he needs to meet Kevin at Area/Code. I hope to work more with them both. - VJ Dana Sky and Nick Brown from The Real World were dancing and having more fun than anybody. - VJ Tim Kash analyzed the Woodies, in depth, which surprising I really needed and appreciated. - Clipse drank. - Byron Ward and I spoke about wtf comes next, and he told me about his comedy showcase thing, which I'm going to check out. - Asher Roth and I hugged. - Gina Esposito I thanked and thanked and thanked. - Chris McCarthy hooked me up. - John Loscalzo looked hot. - Doug Everson makes me happy. - Will I Am, I lost you... - Zooey, I am sorry. - Kim (of Matt & Kim) and I toasted her and Matt's huge performance, not to mention their surprise Best Video Woodie win (I called it months ago!). And then Asher Roth and Janelle Monae went and did this...

Naked At Woodie Awards Rehearsal

December 1, 2009 — 0

The best thing about rehearsing for this year's Woodie Awards: Soundcheck for The Dead Weather. Jack White = Pure Genius. (Even though he wouldn't let me film it.) The second best thing about rehearsing for this year's show: The bike messengers Matt & Kim brought. Eight messengers followed Matt & Kim on bicycles from Brooklyn to the Roseland Ballroom. The plan was for Diplo to spin a wicked set, then Matt & Kim and the bike messengers would arrive at Roseland, ditch their bikes, blast onto the stage, and the messengers would undress to become a naked chorus. We are perfectionists, of course, so we just had to rehearse this over and over and over to make sure they were, you know, undressing at the right time and everything.... After their actual performance at the Woodies, Kim (Stolz) caught up with Matt & Kim. Matt got Kim to admit she likes getting naked more than she lets on. Then they talk about the size of Kim's chest... Set your tivo -- Woodies hit MTV this Friday night, December 4th, at 10pm.

Just Left Matt & Kim Woodie Awards Rehearsal

November 18, 2009 — 0

Tough to figure out lighting and what happens visually in the song's bridge and climax, but lighting designer Chris Lande, Set Designer Tom Lenz, and the rest of the Woodies production team just nailed a really powerful way to kick off the show, which is at Roseland Ballroom in about 20 hours. We are putting on Matt & Kim first, opening the show. A spot Lupe Fiasco and Patrick Stump got last year. MTV and mtvU are reporting about Matt & Kim's rehearsal, as we speak. I was about 3 feet from the band all night, and they sounded amazing, especially with backing vocals by -- shhh don't tell -- 8 bike messengers who transform into their chorus. Check out these photos from tonight's rehearsal. If they're like this in rehearsal, imagine what they will be like at the real thing. Matt & Kim Performance Will Kick Ass Next Wednesday

November 11, 2009 — 2

When we saw Matt & Kim open for Friendly Fires, and then they came and shredded our office to bits, we just had to make sure we locked the Brooklyn duo to perform at the Woodies next Wednesday at Roseland Ballroom. If you've never seen these two play live, you gotta. We've been working with Matt and Kim for the last couple of weeks, and the more we do, the more psyched I get for them to take the stage. They've got great ideas, they never do the same thing twice, and they always go full force, huge energy. I also really appreciate Matt's cinema background, and how much they are collaborating with us on the creative look and feel. Matt & Kim's video has some tough competition for Best Video Woodie this year, up against two artists that are also performing for us next week, Death Cab For Cutie and The Dead Weather. I just voted. Did you? I'm looking at the voting numbers and they're too close to call in this category. One thing's for sure, they all want to take home the chunk of wood, but only one of these artists will... PS I heard that, yesterday, on a call with a reporter covering the Woodies, Chris Walla of Death Cab (who is a great guy) was asked to compare winning a Woodie to winning a Grammy. Guess which one weighs more?
